these perspectives show the further refinement of the entrance with the beams overhead. they also show how the beams follow into the space and meet the floor behind the reception desk in the waiting area. the third perspective shows thoughts about the beams further leading a visitor throughout the space and into the area where the offices are located. in the last perspective that is shown the ceiling is addressed in the area where the classrooms and training rooms are located. the large classroom/training room would be located on the right had side with walls that do not extend all the way to the ceiling but stop and glass continues to the vault so that the girders in the vaulted space can still be seen. also in this last perspective thoughts about making the area in between the classrooms an atrium space that brings nature indoors and also alows the immigrants to have a space to stop and talk and sit between classes.

these are some of my very first thoughts about the connection of the two vaulted spaces and also the organization of the interior spaces. i thought it was important, from the information that was gathered throughout the various interviews, to keep the community areas and the administrative or staff areas separate. the approach i took to accomplish this was to keep the offices for the staff on the east side of the building and the community areas in the west end of the building, this would then allow for an entry in the middle of the community and administrative areas, which would allow for easy navigation throughout the building. also gathered from the interviews the immigrants liked nature and for nature to be incorporated into the interior spaces. the blues and greens and wood tones that i chose to work with allow for nature and light to be brought into the space and provide a calm place for learning.

in these preliminary drawings for the CNNC building i focused on the entryway and was looking at different ways to guide a visitor into the correct entry. the beams overhead direct the visitor from lee street to the community entrance. in the bottom two drawings the entrance is much more like a home entrance with steps that lead to the door and angled beams overhead. within this experimentation of how to lead the visitors to the correct entryway the experimentation with the beams also presented an oportunity to think about how the two vaulted spaces were connected.

Syd and I went to the Glen Haven Developmental Center and talked with the director Stephanie Baldwin. We visited during the time that the children were using the space and being tutored with their homework.

What kind of group services do you provide?
After school tutoring to about 40 children from K-12th grade, called “Homework Haven” from 3-5pm everyday. This program is a homework-tutoring program where students from Guilford College volunteer to tutor. ESL classes are also offered in the evening for adults as well as high school students. They also have Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts once a month within the space. They mainly have children that are Liberian, Sudanese, Montagnard, Latino/ Hispanic, and Burmese.

What kind of facilities would you ideally would you need or like to have?
A larger meeting space with smaller separate meeting rooms where tutors could help the students with homework in a more secluded and quieter setting. Also an outdoor basketball court as well as space outside for meeting. And also ideally an indoor recreation area.

How many participants do you usually have that participate in programs at one time?
There are usually about 40 students that come from 3-5 everyday also about 10 -20 adults and high school students that come for the ESL class.

What problems or issues are you currently experiencing with the space?
There are major volume issues. With all the children working in one room that is the size of an apartment living room it gets very loud, to the point that the children complain that they cannot concentrate and need to go home to work. They need more storage for toys that could be used outside [balls, jump ropes, etc] They also need more desk space [they only had 4 large tables] they also need more computers [they only had 4] they would like to have at least 10 for the children to work on their homework. Also they need A LOT of storage for books, crayons, and other craft supplies. Also they need bulletin board space. Drawings and other things that the children had done were taped on the wall and if there was a specific place for them to be “shown off” the children would really like it. Also more white boards or chalk boards to relay messages to the children that are working and to the tutors. They also needed more file storage. Overhead lighting, bright colors on the walls that do not show dirt.

What do you specifically enjoy about the space the most?
They loved that it was located within the apartment complex in which they lived. They loved the community that the location offered.

What type of activities do children participate in within the space?
They complete homework assignments, as well as craft projects, read, have meetings for Girl and Boy Scouts.

What types of technology, furniture, lights, colors do you have or want?
Overhead lighting, bright colors on the walls that do not show dirt. More computer and up to date computers.

What type of environment do you feel is most comfortable for you to work in?
The main volunteer had her own office that appeared very disorganized, but she said that she had her own space that she could bring one of the children to if they needed to discuss an issue and that she was very “blessed” with the space that she had.

What type of cleaning techniques do you use? [What materials are better for the types of messes that you have]
No carpet!

How much of the space is related to the immigrants and how do they respond to it?
She wished that there was more artwork that relate to the immigrant children that used the space. And that the space was more visually diverse.

Have the immigrants ever asked for changes within the space? And if so what changes did they ask for?
They asked for a playground [that was their main want] and there was a playground that was donated about a year ago.

How much interaction do the people have with the outside environment?
The children love to be outside and play on the playground. They wished that there was a place to meet outside or to even work on homework outside also. They would also love to incorporate an urban garden.

magazine advertisement.

Each of these magazine advertisements are well designed and communicate the function and purpose effectively. The product that is being advertised is clear and easily understood. Within each article the eye is directed toward the product that is being advertised. In the case of the second advertisement the chair is in the middle of the page and white which causes it to jump out at the reader. This is the same in the Cartier advertisement. In the Tiffany & Co. advertisement the color of the jewelry is the same color as the text block which draws the readers eye up toward the product. Repetition is used in the first advertisement. The illustrations throughout all of the advertisements evoke emotions that are parallel with the emotions the product might evoke. The font typefaces and text placement do not take away from the advertisement but rather add to the design. The eye is drawn to the text but then directed toward the main focus of the advertisement, and in the case of the first advertisement the eye is not drawn to the text but rather to the product.

for my welcome mat i had the country of morocco. i started off by researching morocco and moroccan culture. i found a variety of images that conveyed the culture and the people of morocco. these images show the what is seen throughout the landscape, architecture, and people of morocco. i was very interested in the wide use of mosaic tiling which i found out was common among islamic people. i was also interested in the bright and vibrant colors that were used in this tiling and throughout the interiors of the moroccan architecture. another point of interest that i had was with the vast number of morccan lamps. the way the light shinned through these lamps and onto the walls that surround them causes very interesting patterns. this combination of the traditional islamic mosaic work along with the vivid colors and the light that the lamps give became my jumping off point for my welcome mat design.

the research that i did helped me in deciding on what pattern i was going to use on the welcome mat that i produced. the pattern is a traditional islamic star pattern. i highlighted this pattern with vivid colors of red, orange, and yellow and also with light. i felt that the way the pattern went from dense stars on the right to less dense stars on the left was much like the way light comes out of the moroccan lanterns hits the walls around them and the patters that lamp produces become less dense as they flow away from the lamp itself. i also felt that the light coming from this mat, especially at night, would be very welcoming to the moroccan that used it, much like a porch lamp might be to an american.

Family details: Karim’s mother, father, uncle, brother and sister are all in the United States. His other sister and the rest of his family still reside in Egypt.

Occupation: Karim currently works full time at Starbucks as a manager, and he is also attending Wake Technical Community College to get his degree in Accounting.

Path to Coming Here: Karim’s father and uncle came to the United States in 1977 to attend college, and then open their own business. His father moved the family to the United States in 2000, and Karim started 9th grade at Millbrook High School in Raleigh.

Goals/Intentions/Dreams: Karim’s current dreams are to own his own Hookah bar in Raleigh. If that doesn’t work out, he wants to open his own wholesaling business. There is also a possibility that he will take over his father’s and uncle’s carpet cleaning business after his father retires.

Life before and after: As far as living conditions go, life in the United States is much better for Karim. When asked specifically what is better about the US, he answered “Everything.” He also told us that Egyptians who were educated in the United States got more respect and better jobs back in Egypt then people educated in Egypt. Karim said that he misses the strong sense of community that he had in Egypt. He also said that Egypt is more fun than the United States and there was “more stuff to do” there.

Challenges: The challenges of living in the United States are the people, individual community, and language. Karim says the people in Egypt were generally friendlier than in the US, because as you walk through town there, you know everybody. In the US, he says, the communities are more individualized, and that took some getting used to for him. When Karim first moved here, he didn’t know any English, he learned it all once he was already living here. He said it wasn’t very difficult to learn how to speak English, he just had some problems with the grammar. Today, Karim’s English is very good, and he only has a slight accent.

Acculturation: Karim says that he has taken the things he likes about each culture and put them together. At home his family still keeps their traditions, but Karim also enjoys activities that other Americans would. He has found a lot of Arabic friends in Raleigh that he hangs out with regularly, but he also has a lot of American friends too. Him and his friends spend a lot of time together doing both American and more Arabic activities, like going to movies and shopping, but they also go to hookah bars and have parties where they dance to Arabic music. They all include their American friends in this too, so it’s interesting to see how he not only experiences and embraces our culture, but lets Americans experience some of his culture.

Computing in Architectural Design

Computing in design has always been an integral part of the design process, in many different ways. From the first architects that would use the computers to help with complex calculations of large numbers, to entering building modules of a building into the computer with a light pen, to the computer aided design that we think of today.

Computing in design today has come a long way in technology and usefulness from its predecessors in the early days of computer-aided design. Known as second-generation CAD systems, the computer-aided design of today is lead by the introduction of the personal computer, the mouse, and display technology that had not previously existed. This technology was now available to a more wide range of architects. The advent of faster and more capable processors allowed the architects to complete more complex modeling systems than before, and these modeling systems were available to more people, not just high-end workstations. Also the introduction of ink jet printers went hand in hand with the increased technology of computer-aided design. Now not only were architects able to see their work on screen, but able to print out their design on a wide range of surfaces. This helped to communicate their design to clients. This is still very useful today.

Computer-aided design in general helps to make the execution of a certain task more efficient and more precise. The computer does not know when the designer makes a mistake and similarly cannot put out its own thoughts on the design. This leads to what computer-aided design could be in the future, a system that is not simply used as a tool but rather as a viable design assistant, much like a junior architect to a senior architect. If a task is not interesting enough to require the full attention of the designer then that designer could turn the task over to the computer. This ability to delegate tasks to a machine could prove beneficial in time management and also accuracy of the task at hand. This ability of computers to go beyond the designs in patience, design ability, speed and memory, may allow for better and more simple design solutions.

Although the computer is a giant help in the world of design, there are still drawbacks to its use. The fact that the computer is its own separate world away from the world that we design for can cause use to be disjointed in our designs. Also the fact that with the increased technology and the computer doing more and more on its own, we come to the road block of the computer not knowing the full needs of a client. By this the computer may know the programmable needs, but since it is a machine, not the emotional needs of a space and that spaces relation to a human.

Computers aid in design everyday and will continue to aid in the design process as long as human brainpower is inferior to that of computer processors.

Close to Home: Edward Loewenstein and Modernism in Greensboro

The main concept that is manifested throughout the Close to Home, Edward Loewenstein and Modernism in Greensboro, exhibit is that of connection. Modernism from throughout the country and world was connected to modernism here at home. Also the students from the Women’s College were connected to the community through their projects, and the exhibit itself is connected to the community as well.

The exhibit makes many connections in the materials and light that it contains. The exhibit itself is made of many posts all brought together, connected, into one cohesive structure. The horizontal metal poles allow the eye to follow around the exhibit and make connections between each informational panel. Also the metal mesh is continuous around the outside walls, which allow the eye and the viewer to connect between each panel of information.The light in the exhibit was very low, allowing for the natural sunlight to enter and be noticed. This
connected the exhibit to the outside community and world, the exhibit would not have been as successful had the sunlight not been able to infiltrate the space.

The images, text and graphics also contributed to this concept of connection. Much of the information stretched from one panel to the next allowing for the viewer to continue moving throughout the exhibit and connect to the next piece of information that was presented. The information that was presented in the panels added much to the concept of connection. The information explained how modernism in Greensboro connected to modernism throughout the world. It also showed how modernism was close to home and connected to our program with the building of the various Commencement Houses, in the Women’s College.

The different media that is presented throughout the exhibit does different jobs and has different success levels. The structure, as a media in and of itself, contains the exhibit and presents the information that is to be presented. This was very successful in that it led the viewer in and around in the information. It caused the viewer to feel as if they were a part of the exhibit, twisting and turning around the information, as opposed to encountering the information on flat walls. Another media that did specific work in the exhibit was that of the digital presentations. They were intended to lead the viewer through a digital recreation of the space. This media was not as successful as the other media, specifically because it was hard to view. When in the exhibit with many people it was difficult to see, for people walking in front of you.

The space in which the exhibit was installed was not merely a box to house the exhibit but rather interacted and contributed to the exhibit. The wall that separates the exhibit from the entranceway was intersected with a panel of information. It then continued to another wall that was on the outside of the exhibit. The ways in which the human experience was impacted were again through connections; experience was connected from the entranceway to the inside of the exhibit, and from the inside back to the outside.

Through many connections, from the information presented and the viewer, to the connection of modernism throughout the world and modernism close to home, the concept of connection is seen throughout the exhibit.

1. As with all history it is imperative to know where we, as a society, have been to know where we will go. This is the case with design as well. It is imperative, as designers, that we look at design from the past to know we design in the future will lead. This course has changed the way in which I view design, as central to humanity. As humans we must be aware of the built environment that surrounds us and aware of the ways in which that built environment came to being, through the knowledge of history and theory that the particular designer brought with them to the design.

2. One building that we have discussed in class that links forward to design practice today is that of the Crystal Palace, in England. This structure was designed to follow the function of its use as an exhibition hall. This can be linked to today in that many buildings, the function rather than form are the first thoughts that come to be about a structure. Also there was a concern about the environment, the structure goes over the elm trees that were on the land. Today many buildings and designers take into consideration the environment that exists in and around the building site.

3. As designers we must always embrace the past that came before and also be innovative in the present. We do this by being knowledgeable about design from the past, and applying that knowledge to present circumstances. As well as applying knowledge about the past we must also be innovative in the ways in which we apply the knowledge. This can be done by creating a perspective that does not simply embrace the past but proactively uses past knowledge to improve upon the present. By looking at what was successful and not successful in the past we are able to apply this knowledge and use it, or be innovative and transform concepts to work today.

4.Television in the 1950’s and 1960’s was very influential on the culture of the time. The ideas and concepts that were portrayed on television were brought into the home. This can be seen in today’s society still through the television. Design and culture are streamed through the television at any given time that it is one, whether through programming or commercials. The cultural “norm” is pushed though the programming and into the home. In the 50’s and 60’s different “norms” were accepted such as family values and ways of advertising, that are far different from today, but the concept of these ideas coming to the people through the television are the same.

Our direction is to be innovative and to build off of each of our charrettes, as well as keeping in mind the intents of our individual architects and designers. Our intent is to create an innovative design, centralized around an open and simple floor plan, allowing for form to follow the function of the space, and reinterpreting moments with elimination of ornamentation.

The intent for my sister’s house is comprised of many aspects that come together cohesively to one main intention throughout the various exercises that we have done. In examining light at the site through the light charrette, we were able to capture the different angles of the sun and determine that light was an important aspect that we wanted to incorporate. Following the research of various artists and designers of the 1930’s innovation became a key idea. Many of the designers that we researched, thought in new ways about ordinary objects or ideas. This leads our group to think about my sister’s house in innovative ways as well. After reviewing the good, bad, and ugly materials we again came back to innovation. The bad and ugly materials when used in innovative ways were no longer bad and ugly. Rather they took on a new life and were not merely about the material but the ways in which that material was used. The main intent that was gathered from the various charrettes, analysis, and research was that of innovation, innovation in material use, in ideas, and in the overall design of my sister’s house.
